Overview

Modoc is the story of a boy and his adventures in life together with his sister an elephant.  They are both born at the same time during the winter of 1898 and were named Bram Gunterstein and the elephant, Modoc.   Throughout his life Bram is the trainer for Modoc.  He learns the art of being a mahout, an elephant trainer, from his father.  When the circus he and his father work for is sold, Modoc is sold to a Mr. North along with most of the other circus animals.  Since they are in Germany the boy and his elephant must sail to America where the circus resides, via India.  Bram vows to his girlfriend Gertie, that he will love her forever and return to marry her. When the ship sinks he begins a series of adventures with Modoc in India.   Finally, Modoc and Bram make it back to America and the North Circus.  Modoc and Bram give the best show ever done by an elephant in the circus. Then one day Modoc is kidnapped from a train and disappears for ten years.  Finally, Ralph Helfer buys Modoc, and Bram and Gertie are reunited with Modoc.
